Teenage Suicide in USA

47,173 Americans died of suicide in 2017, making it the 10th leading cause of death in the USA 1. It’s the 3rd largest cause of teenage deaths, only falling short of accidents and homicide 2.

Suicide doesn’t discriminate. Anyone of any gender, age, race or socioeconomic status might feel suicidal at any point in their lives – even if they “have it all” or appear to be happy from the outside.

However, teenagers are specifically at risk for suicide.

Update On Raising Awareness for Mental Health Campaign

After talking to the team, they have all agreed that they are still very much interested in doing the tour and would do it as soon as possible. While no one can give an exact timeframe due to the virus, everyone is still invested in seeing this campaign take off. The team members themselves are all well and good, everyone is practising social distancing and following the guidelines properly.

The team is still accepting donations on the GoFundMe page and looking for more people willing to share their stories. If you would like to share your story send us an email or send us a message on our Facebook page. Keep well, and stay safe everyone.

Saving Water

One good thing about all the thunderstorms we are having is how much water we are able to save. Every time it starts raining we put whatever we can to collect water outside.

Cold Weather and Picking Up Carpentry

Cold weather has driven us to pick up more firewood for hot water and inadvertently caused us to pick up carpentry. Having more time on our hands has already driven us to invent new things in the tailoring workshop, now we are looking at carpentry. While we don't have most of the tools to make more advanced items we use the little we have to build and make small items. Although we always wanted to go into carpentry at one point, not only for building new things but also as a learning opportunity for the kids, we planned to do this much later once we were better equipped.

Tailoring

Due to all the newfound time during the situation, we have been able to come up with more designs and work on some cool projects with the kids during their free time. Here are the pictures of some of the things we have made so far.

Farm Updates and Pre-kitchen

Farming has been our main focus during the lockdown, it is more essential than before. The farms no longer just feed us and the kids but families in dire need. As we mentioned in our previous post we have been giving food to families worse off, to be able to sustain all of us we have expanded our gardens and made the most use of small spaces. The Pre-kitchen luckily was still able to run and here in Uganda, delivery was one of the few things allowed during the strictest time of the lockdown.

Donations

During the lockdown, we have been receiving food donations that we distribute to different families in need. As you are all aware due to the virus jobs are being disrupted or people are being fired, because of this Pursuit for Sanyu has done the best to help the children we support and their families to at least have food. Most of the food donations are from our termly sponsors, they all decided instead of paying for school fees during this time that they would donate money for food. Thanks to this many families have been able to survive. We thank the sponsors for their generosity during these trying times. Other food donations actually come from our own gardens and Pre-kitchen, since most of our other projects have been put on hold we are focusing on our agricultural farm and the pigs.

Kids and School

Hello everyone, as we said in our previous post we are giving more details into how lockdown is affecting us. School wise the kids are all homeschooling. Some schools the kids were going to have lessons on radio and WhatsApp. Other schools have given online links to work they should be doing. Emails are sent to the kids from the schools with updates on the situation for schools as well as lesson presentations.

For the most part, the kids are going forward with their lessons however it means a lot of the time the kids are on rotation on the computer and phone. To avoid them constantly staring at screens we are printing what we can and have older kids tutor the younger ones. For the children that do not stay on our compound, they have to follow strict protocols with wearing masks at all times and disinfecting before entering as well as only being allowed in on certain days. If we can manage we send the lessons and books to the households where the children stay. Because the school year is uncertain we are taking things as they come and are preparing the kids as much as we can.

We Are All Well And Safe

Hello everyone, it has been a very long past year for everyone. Right after our last update our laptop died, very unfortunate, but then again this year doesn't seem to be the best either so it fits right in. This post will be a quick update but we will be going into detail in our next posts. First things first as the title says we are all safe and well, the kids are at the moment homeschooling and most of our projects that we had planned are being postponed until the situation with the virus changes. The Raising Awareness for Mental campaign will also have to be postponed, however, we are still hoping to follow through with it once we can, that being said we are still accepting donations for the cause and any stories people wish to share. Contact us on our email for more information about the campaign or visit our GoFundMe page. We wish everyone the best for the rest of the year and stay healthy and safe.

Happy New Year Everyone! 2020

The last year we had quite a few low points and struggles but we have made it again to a new beginning. Never forget that with the low times in life we learn and adapt, it's not always about the end but the journey.
